Mack Brown and North Carolina suffered a brutal loss to James Madison on Saturday in Chapel Hill.

The Dukes defeat UNC 70-50 in a game that was never particularly close after the first quarter. JMU cleared the 50-point threshold before halftime and ended up averaging 8.4 yards per play on the day.

UNC’s offense played well on a down-to-down basis, but the Tar Heels turned it over 5 times in this game. Those giveaways resulted in 20 James Madison points — representing the difference in this game.

In his postgame press conference, Brown admitted he was “embarrassed” by the result.

“Embarrassed. It was awful,” Brown said. “You can’t get beat by a Group of 5 team, and you certainly can’t get beat like that … you can’t draw it up any worse.”

James Madison quarterback Alonza Barnett III was extremely efficient in this game. He threw for 388 yards and 5 touchdowns in the win over the Tar Heels. He also rushed for 99 yards and 2 more scores on the ground.

Any progress that UNC appeared to make defensively under new DC Geoff Collins took a major step back on Saturday.

Carolina is now 3-1 on the season and will play at Duke next weekend.
