It’s been a while since Mack Brown and Steve Spurrier crossed paths on the field in coaching, but this week’s Duke-North Carolina game has jogged some memories.

This is the 30th anniversary of the 1989 game where Spurrier led his Duke team to a 41-0 win over Brown’s Tar Heels.

Brown was asked about his memories from the game.

“I think the game was 41-0, and Steve and I, and Sally and Jerri, his wife were eating dinner one night.” Brown said. “Jerri looked at me and said ‘I bet you hope there’s a day, when you get to line up and beat Steve 41-0.’ And I said, ‘no,’ I hope it’s 55 (to nothing) with Steve sitting there. But he understood that, and we never played again.”

Brown was asked if his friend would make a return to coaching in college football, specifically the ACC.

“I don’t know,” Brown said, according to The Big Spur. “You know, he was coaching in the Alliance, and doing a good job there and having a lot of fun with it, so, I think you could probably plan on seeing Steve somewhere else some day. You never know.”

The former Duke, Florida and South Carolina coach has officially been out of coaching since earlier this year, but in college football since 2015, when he stepped down from the Gamecocks after 11 seasons. He made his return to coaching the AAF, and went 7-1 with the Orlando Apollos before the league folded.
