Major Applewhite is a college football head coach again.

Applewhite, 45, has been promoted by South Alabama from offensive coordinator to head coach after Kane Wommack left to take the Alabama defensive coordinator job.

A native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Applewhite had a standout career at Texas from 1998-to-2001. Applewhite was the Big 12’s Offensive Freshman of the Year in 1998 and Co-Offensive Player of the Year in 1999. An All-Big 12 first-team selection in 1999, Applewhite broke numerous Longhorn records during his career.

Applewhite got his coaching start at his alma mater as a graduate assistant in 2003. After stops at Syracuse and Rice, Applewhite joined Nick Saban’s staff.

Applewhite was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Alabama for the 2007 season. He went back to Texas in 2008 and was on staff through 2013, Mack Brown’s final season in Austin.

Applewhite was offensive coordinator at Houston in the 2015 and ’16 seasons. Following Tom Herman’s departure, Houston promoted Applewhite to head coach ahead of the 2017 season.

Houston fired Applewhite after his second full season ended with a 70-14 bowl game loss to Army. The Cougars went 15-10 in two seasons under Applewhite.

After being fired by Houston, Applewhite reunited with Saban, joining Alabama’s staff as an offensive analyst for the 2019 and ’20 seasons. He took the South Alabama OC/QB coach position ahead of the 2021 season.
