Malachi Moore has played his final down at Alabama. Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer revealed Wednesday that Moore will have surgery to address an injury, making him unavailable for the ReliaQuest Bowl game against Michigan.
“He’s been going through an injury pretty much a lot of the season and it just got to the point that he wasn’t going to play, so I’m putting that out there,” DeBoer told media members. “He’s having surgery actually today. He wanted to do everything he could to get out there… was trying to wait it out to see if it could be something he was able to participate in.
“Probably the biggest thing I’ll say, he just grinded through the year with it. It’s not something recent, but something that’s been ongoing, and maybe some of you kind of saw something… Hats off to how much he loves this place, how bad he wanted to be out there on the field each and every Saturday and even how bad he wanted to be out there with these guys and finish it off and his career, for the bowl game. Unfortunately, not what happened.
“Love that kid to death. He’s got a bright future in everything he does. He poured a lot into this place, a lot of passion, a lot of want to, a lot of desire, a lot of things I know the rest of the team really took from him and learned along the way.”
Moore began his Alabama career in 2020, earning second-team All-SEC recognition as he helped the Crimson Tide win a College Football Playoff National Championship. After the 2023 season, he opted to use his COVID year of extra eligibility to return in 2024, his fifth at UA.
Moore will depart Tuscaloosa having played in 64 games. He logged 214 total tackles, including 127 solo stops, 15.5 TFLs and 2.5 sacks. He also had 31 passes defended, with 7 interceptions.
Moore has accepted an invitation to take part in the Senior Bowl.
