Malachi Toney gave Miami just the response it was looking for in Monday night’s national title game.

With Fernando Mendoza scoring on an incredible scramble on 4th-and-5 at the other end of the field, giving Indiana a 24-14 lead with a little over 9 minutes left at Hard Rock Stadium, Toney provided an incredible answer of his own with a 22-yard touchdown dash off a pitch from Carson Beck to get the Hurricanes back within 3 points for the 3rd time in the second half.

Toney’s touchdown came with 6:32 still left, and so Miami had plenty of time to pull off a comeback as the Canes and Hoosiers traded punches right down to the closing stages of the fourth quarter.

Here was Toney creating some magic of his own to answer Mendoza’s magic:

Three times Indiana had a 10-point lead in the second half and each time Miami came through with a touchdown to get within 3 points, the first times coming on Mark Fletcher touchdown runs. This time, it was Toney’s turn to reignite the Hurricanes, making it 24-21 with everything on the line at Hard Rock Stadium.

Toney was over 100 yards receiving in the game, and was looking for more as the final minutes were played in Miami’s home stadium.
