Auburn coach Gus Malzahn wouldn’t name his starting quarterback during his press conference Monday. However, he did say it was possible that a decision could be made “in the near future.”

Malzahn said he hopes the starting quarterback will be “more of a runner” in 2016. Auburn quarterbacks combined for 186 yards in 2015, which was the lowest of Malzahn’s tenure.

Junior Jeremy Johnson started in Auburn’s first three games before being benched for freshman Sean White. Eventually, Johnson regained the starting job late in the season, but has been competing with White and JUCO transfer John Franklin III for the starting throughout role throughout the offseason.

Malzahn also updated the status of several Auburn players who have missed time due to injuries. Wide receiver Tony Stevens, who spent Sunday on crutches, is expected to return to action this week.

Freshman wide receiver Kyle Davis is also expected to return this week after being sidelined throughout fall practice with a foot injury.

Graduate transfer defensive back Marshall Taylor is also expected to join the team this week after being injured in an off-field altercation this summer. Linebacker Tre’ Williams is also expected to make a full recovery from an ankle injury.
