Marcus Freeman has spent four seasons as Notre Dame‘s head coach. Could the NFL be in his future?
According to NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo, that’s not out of the question.
Per Garofalo, Freeman has been mentioned as someone who is “expect(ed) to be” in the mix for the New York Giants’ vacant head coaching position. The Giants parted ways with Brian Daboll 10 games into his fourth season on the sideline.
Freeman has been impressive since being named Notre Dame’s head coach at the end of the 2021 season after Brian Kelly left for LSU. He’s 43-12, including an appearance in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game to cap the 2024 campaign.
After the Fighting Irish went 10-2 in 2025, many felt they’d be in the Playoff in back-to-back seasons and for the fourth time in program history. But they were controversially left out of the 12-team field, opting afterwards not to play in a bowl altogether.
Whoever takes over in New York will have a big task in front of them. Despite a 9-7-1 mark in 2022 that saw the Giants make the playoffs, things have been rough for the franchise. They will finish 2025 with their third straight sub.-500 record.
