Mario Cristobal admitted to the clock management blunder that cost Miami a win in the closing seconds Saturday night against Georgia Tech.

Miami fell to Georgia Tech 23-20 after the Hurricanes had the lead and the ball with less than 40 seconds remaining on Saturday night. With Georgia Tech out of timeouts, Miami chose not to take a knee and run out the clock.

Don Chaney Jr. then fumbled the ball with 26 seconds remaining and Georgia Tech recovered. The Yellow Jackets then marched down the field and scored a touchdown with 2 seconds remaining to earn the 23-20 win.

“We should’ve taken a knee,” Cristobal said. “We gave them a chance, they took advantage and scored.”

Cristobal added that they talked about “2 hands on the ball, but that’s not good enough. … No excuse.”

Cristobal said there was no confusion about whether Tech had a timeout.

“No other excuse for it, saying he should have done this, that’s it,” he said. “Should have done it. Sometimes get carried away to finish the game and run it, but I should have stepped in and said, ‘Hey, take a knee.’

Cristobal also said it wasn’t in an effort to get Chaney 100 yards in the game. Chaney finished with 106 rushing yards.
