It was the news heard ’round the world.
After a triumphant return to the gridiron on Saturday night, Georgia star running back Todd Gurley suffered a knee injury that was confirmed by university officials as a torn ACL on Sunday.
In his weekly teleconference on Sunday evening, Georgia head coach Mark Richt was seemingly at a loss for words.
“Sad, sad news” Richt said after a heavy sigh.
The injury almost surely ends Gurley’s career in Athens, though Richt wouldn’t go so far as to say so.
Richt on Gurley entering the 2015 NFL draft: “I don’t know that answer. I don’t want to speak for him.”

Said Richt: “Todd’s been fantastic. Without a doubt one of the best running backs I’ve ever seen, I’ve ever coached. Practiced hard, played hard. Loved the big games and played his heart out for Georgia. I’m really proud I had an opportunity to coach him.”
