When projecting the top breakout performers in the SEC last season, many were eager to point toward true freshman MarShawn Lloyd.

Those predictions obviously never had a chance once Lloyd was lost for the season due to injury, but in his place, Kevin Harris proved to be one of the league’s best running backs.

Now the foundation of the offense in Columbia is expected to be the combo of Lloyd and Harris carrying the football for the Gamecocks, provided Lloyd is fit to return to the field this fall.

Not only is that fully expected to happen, Shane Beamer has suggested the redshirt freshman may be a full-go at some point this spring.

With spring practice set to open on Saturday in Columbia, Beamer was asked if there was a chance we could see Lloyd take the field for the upcoming spring game.

“I think we are so far away from the spring game it would be hard to say yay or nay on him right now with something that is over a month away,” Beamer answered on Thursday. “I can tell you this, he has been fantastic this offseason. I was just telling him this offseason, just a couple of days ago, how impressed I am with him.”

According to the South Carolina coach, Lloyd has proven to be one of the most accountable players thus far during his 100 days in Columbia.

“We track everything here, as any program does, but just giving our guys a score each week taking care of their business — not just inside this building but outside this building — and he is right up there at the very top of our team as far as accountability goes,” Beamer continued. “Being everywhere he is supposed to be, when he’s supposed to be there, whether it’s meetings, walkthroughs, class, treatment, nutrition.

“He’s doing everything right right now. He is certainly on track and had been out there for all the stuff we have been doing as a team at night in a limited capacity and excited to see him progress.”

It’s pretty unbelievable to think Lloyd could return so quickly from his season-ending injury suffered last September but that just goes to show how hard the young running back has attacked the rehab process.

Here is to hoping we see Lloyd on the field sooner than later.
