Matt Barrie and Dan Mullen made their cases for how Texas could upset Alabama in Week 2 on Friday. Last season’s meeting was decided by one point.

Mullen made his case first by explaining how the Texas defense contained Alabama up until the final drive in the fourth quarter last season.

“There’s one unit that rarely gets mentioned. It’s the one that gave up about only 170 yards to Rice. It’s a unit that were able to contain Alabama last year, with the exception of a first-overall pick in the draft, Bryce Young, at the end of the game. They got a break with the safety, but that last drive by Bryce Young was special. This Texas defense has the opportunity to step up and be special. If they’re able to stop the run and force Alabama to throw, that could bode very well for the Longhorns.

Is Texas back? Barrie believed the Alabama game is a chance for Texas to prove themselves. If not now, when is the right time?

Barrie thinks this could be a chance for Texas to announce themselves to the rest of the country before moving to the SEC in 2024.

“If not this Saturday against Nick Saban and Alabama, who haven’t been to the playoffs in two years. Sark has everything in front of him. I’m not saying if they lose this game, they can’t run the table and make it to the College Football Playoff. This is such a moment for Texas to plant that Longhorn flag and say ‘Hey Tuscaloosa, Baton Rouge, Athens, Knoxville. We’re coming.'”

Can Texas pull off the upset? Kickoff will be Saturday at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.
