Matt Canada has been fired by the Pittsburgh Steelers, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Tuesday morning.
The Steelers fired Canada, who has served in that position since 2021, after their 4th loss of the season that included another stagnant offensive performance against the Cleveland Browns. The Steelers are 6-4 on the season.
The Steelers’ offense ranks 28th in the NFL. They averaged 16.6 points per game and 297.9 yards per game under Canada.
One concern that Steelers’ fans have had is the lack of development of second-year quarterback Kenny Pickett. He has recorded just 1,722 yards, 6 touchdowns and 4 interceptions this season, a disappointing start after many expected him to take a leap this season. Pickett has had just 1 game in his career with multiple touchdowns.
Before Canada was offensive coordinator, he joined the team as the quarterbacks’ coach in 2020. He climbed the ranks of the NCAA before departing for the NFL, serving as the offensive coordinator for several collegiate teams, including LSU in 2017.
The Steelers will take on the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday in their first game without Canada at the helm.
