Ole Miss has had an up-and-down start to the 2019 season. The Rebels are about to play their toughest game yet as No. 2 Alabama is next on the schedule.
On Wednesday’s SEC media teleconference, Ole Miss coach Matt Luke was asked a few Alabama-related questions. Luke shared his thoughts on Crimson Tide WR Henry Ruggs III, QB Tua Tagovailoa, the UA defense and more.
- On Alabama’s receiving corps: (Laughs) They’re very good. The thing that’s scary is how many underneath routes they catch & turn into big plays. … They have the best receiving corps in the country. … It’s definitely a challenge & they are dynamic for sure.
- On what he has seen facing Tagovailoa: He’s always a fast release and accurate, but the command is there, it’s still coming out fast and to the right spot.
- On Alabama’s inexperienced defense: Their defense hasn’t changed any since the eight years I’ve been here… I’ve been very impressed, there hasn’t been a huge drop-off. The challenge is trying to get them to play a bunch of snaps and making them go to their bench, they haven’t had to do much of that.
Luke also touched on some Ole Miss topics:
- On assistant Freddie Roach, an Alabama native helping in recruiting: It’s been huge, we have a lot of ties and connections to Alabama so that’s been a positive for us. He has done a great job with that.
- On QB Matt Corral’s health: We are trying to get him back, he was very limited yesterday. We are trying to get him ready, John Rhys (Plumlee) is very different, so we would like to have both ready to play and make them prepare for them both.
- On pressuring the pocket: Very important, having our eyes in the right place. It helps create conflict in the RPO… but we have to tackle when they get it out.
- On his OL: They continue to improve and get better… they continue to improve and get better.
