After Texas A&M had the worst season on offense of the Kevin Sumlin era, offensive coordinator Noel Mazzone was brought in from UCLA to kick start the unit in College Station. Considering the one area Mazzone particularly specializes in is the power run game, the Aggies hope to be vastly improved on the ground this season.
The main question now is who will run the ball for A&M?
According to Mazzone, look for the Aggies to have a ‘three- or four-headed monster’ at tailback to start the season.
“I’m really excited about the talent in that group,” Mazzone said, according to Brian Perroni of GigEm247. “It’s kind of like a three- or four-headed monster back there so I think a committee is what’s going to be back there for a while until one of them steps up and says, ‘Hey, I need it 25 times a game.'”
The A&M running backs competing for reps this camp include: Junior James White, former Oklahoma Sooner and five-star recruit Keith Ford, redshirt freshman Kendall Bussey and true freshman (and early enrollee) Trayveon Williams. Each back is expected to get looks early in camp and should get plenty of carries early in the season to determine if any of them is capable of being the go-to back.
“I think as a group, any time you’ve got competition, and I think in that group we’ve got great competition, I think that’s kind of the making of a good football team,” he said. “So I’m excited to see those guys get up and see who’s going to step up front.”
