Michigan announces temporary, department-wide sports shutdown

With a new variant of COVID-19 making its way to the United States — one that is potentially more infectious and more severe — some schools are weighing their options.
On Saturday night, the Michigan Wolverines announced they were instituting a 2-week shutdown of all sports.
In a press release, Michigan said games and practices in all sports would be paused for up to 14 days:
“Canceling competitions is never something we want to do, but with so many unknowns about this variant of COVID-19, we must do everything we can to minimize the spread among student-athletes, coaches, staff, and to the student-athletes at other schools,” said Warde Manuel, the Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics.
The school said in the release that there’s no information on how games will be impacted beyond Feb. 7 at this point in time.
