Michigan enters the 2025 season looking to get much better play from the quarterback position. The Wolverines got inconsistent play at that spot last year, and they brought in some talent to fix that.
Bryce Underwood was a 5-star prospect and the No. 1 player in the 2025 class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He committed to LSU early, but signed with Michigan late in the recruiting process. On Sunday, ESPN reported that Underwood will be the starter for the Wolverines in Week 1.
Fresno State transfer Mikey Keene was in contention, but Underwood was able to beat him out for the spot. Last year, Michigan quarterbacks threw for only 1,699 yards, 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. The lack of consistency and big plays allowed opposing defenses to stack the box with eight, sometimes even nine guys.
Underwood is a dynamic player who can beat opposing defenses with both his arm, as well as his legs. During his high school career, he won 38 straight games and led his team to two state championships.
The Wolverines open the season up against New Mexico on Aug. 30 at the Big House. Getting Underwood a start in Week 1 is big, because Michigan has a tough road test in Week 2 in Norman against the Oklahoma Sooners.
