Tennessee special teams coach Mike Ekeler has been a source of personality on Rocky Top ever since head coach Josh Heupel brought him in last season.

On Wednesday, Ekeler gave a strong message about his philosophy on what it takes to truly be great, both in college football and in life.

“99% of the people in this world want to be great,” Ekeler said, via Rocky Top Insider. “Would you agree with that? They’re called ‘wannabes’. One percent work to be great.”

The rest of Ekeler’s message can be seen below:

Tennessee is set to have a strong year in 2022, returning elite playmakers such as quarterback Hendon Hooker and wideout Cedric Tillman. The special teams has also made a jump under Ekeler, finishing in the top 20 in five separate categories in 2021, including blocked punts (2nd) kick return average (15th) and punt return defense (5th).
