Mike Elko will be counting on Marcel Reed to help Texas A&M improve on what turned out to be a disappointing 2024 season.
“I think from the second he got back from his winter break, I think he stepped into the building as the guy who’s going to be the starting quarterback,” Elko said at SEC Media Days on Thursday. “I think you’re going to see a massive jump from him.”
Elko was asked when he saw Reed take ownership of his new role as QB1, a role he took in place of Conner Weigman during the 2024 campaign.
“(It) probably started right when we got back for the spring semester,” Elko said. “I think his wanting and desire to, one, get the receivers together to start working on the timing in the passing game, then his ability to want to get in with our offensive staff and kind of start going back through the playbook, back through the details of what we’re doing schematically, starting to really lock in on the finer points of the scheme.”
Reed played in 11 games in 2024, throwing for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns while running for 543 yards and 7 TDs. While the Aggies went 8-5 that season, they’ll be looking for better days in 2025 with Reed beginning the year as starter.
“Again, I think you’re going to see a massive jump from him,” Elko said.
Texas A&M will open the 2025 season with UTSA on Aug. 30.
