Most who have watched Texas A&M running back Rueben Owens know that his best football in College Station is still in front of him. The talented Aggies RB’s highly-anticipated sophomore season didn’t quite go as planned as he dealt with some injury issues, perhaps related to the leg injury that kept him out of the 2024 season.

On Monday, Aggies head coach Mike Elko met with reporters to give some comments on the Aggies’ offseason thus far. When asked about the running back room for 2026, Elko responded with positivity, insisting he believe they have a “really, really good room.”

Elko then went further into detail, specifically mentioning Owens and how an offseason of getting fully healthy will be crucial for him. “That injury took a major toll on him,” Elko said. “I think this offseason now, starting fresh being healthy from the beginning, I think you’ll see a much better version of Rueben.”

Owens’ talent is hard to miss. The 5-11 back moves like he was shot out of a cannon and averaged 5.4 yards per carry with 639 yards and 5 touchdowns this past season, sharing the backfield with NFL-bound Le’Veon Moss and dual-threat QB Marcel Reed. With KC Concepcion out the door as well, Owens should get a lot of shine as a primary playmaker for the Aggies in 2026.

Of course, Owens is at his best as a receiving threat, too. His speed and maneuverability make him a dangerous weapon in space, earning him 13 receptions for 130 yards.

Owens has suffered through injury issues just about every year of his career. If he can stay healthy, he’s one of the more talented skill position players in the conference.
