Mike Elko reflects on what went wrong at the end of Texas A&M’s 2024 season

Texas A&M got off to a great start in Year 1 of the Mike Elko era.

Entering November, the Aggies were 7-1 and looked well on their way to competing for a spot in the College Football Playoff. But Texas A&M collapsed from there, losing 3 of its final 4 regular-season games before also dropping a bowl-game contest to USC.

Losses to South Carolina and Auburn dashed those hopes while a home defeat to rival Texas pushed the Aggies further down the final CFP rankings. On Tuesday at the SEC’s spring meetings in Destin, Elko reflected on what went wrong last November.

“It was a lot of things,” Elko said. “We were in situations we were not in before, back-to-back night games on road as the team being hunted. I don’t think we handled that well when you look at it.”

Texas A&M is entering Year 2 of Elko with legitimate CFP aspirations, although the betting markets don’t seem to view the Aggies as a strong SEC contender. At BetMGM, Texas A&M currently has a win total of 7.5 and is +1400 to win the SEC.

Perhaps the experience of being “hunted,” as Elko put it, will help the Aggies take a big step forward in 2025.
