Nothing turns the tide of a football game more than turnovers and penalties. Thus far, the Texas A&M Aggies have mostly avoided the former (3 giveaways in 4 games). They’ve struggled in the latter category, though, with 38 infractions over those same 4 contests. This has forced head coach Mike Elko to take drastic measures.

During his Monday press conference, Elko claimed to have started the “Texas A&M Football Coaches Cabo Fund.” He told reporters that players will contribute to the fund “every time” they get a penalty.

The Aggies have been whistled for 13 penalties in each of their battles against Power 4 opponents (at Notre Dame, vs. Auburn). They’ve narrowly dodged the bad luck associated with that number, winning those games by a combined 7 points.

You can only overcome such undisciplined play for so long. Elko knows it will eventually catch up to Texas A&M if it’s not nipped in the bud. Harping on it now, with a (relatively) light portion of the schedule coming up — vs. Mississippi State, vs. Florida, at Arkansas — should have things fixed before a trip to Baton Rouge to end October.

The way Mississippi State has played this year, the Bulldogs very well could win in College Station on Saturday if the Aggies continue being undisciplined. Kickoff between Mississippi State and Texas A&M is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on the SEC Network.
