Senior Day is always a family affair. That was true Saturday at Kyle Field for more than just the Aggie players who were playing their final games in front of The 12th Man. Samford kicker Ethan Fisher also had an emotional day in College Station.

His father used to coach the Aggies.

The school’s current football coach, Mike Elko, made sure to meet with Fisher before and after the game. In his postgame press conference, Elko thanked the Fisher family for the role they played in helping him get to where he is now.

“I went over to him before the game when he was warming up and just told him I was proud of him, to see him grow into what he’s become as a college player,” Elko said. “Coach Fisher and his family did an awful lot for the Elkos and our family. We’re certainly not here without him and without his support.

“I appreciated it. It was really cool to see him. Brought back some memories, for sure.”

When Jimbo Fisher got to Texas A&M in 2018, Elko was the man he hired to run his defense. Elko had been the defensive coordinator at Notre Dame the year prior. He served as the DC and safeties coach at A&M for 4 seasons before getting the head coaching job at Duke.

Fisher’s dismissal in 2023 led to Elko’s return to the program prior to the 2024 season.

Now, just 2 years into his tenure, Elko has the Aggies on the doorstep of their first perfect regular season since 1992. All that stands between A&M, the SEC Championship Game, and the College Football Playoff is Texas next weekend.
