Mississippi State commit leads Alabama All-Stars in interstate showdown

For high school prospects from the states of Alabama and Mississippi, the annual Alabama-Mississippi State All-Star Football Game is a chance to not only prove their own value, but the value of high school football in their home state.

That’s why the ending to this year’s game was particularly interesting. Alabama beat Mississippi 36-30, earning its sixth straight victory in the rivalry. However, the game-winning score came from a recruit who’ll head across state lines next year to begin his college career.

Johnson, who played his high school football at Hoover High School in Hoover, Ala., is a three-star prospect who chose MSU over Kentucky, Southern Miss and Western Kentucky. The only FBS program from the state of Alabama to seriously pursue Johnson was UAB, which no longer has a program.

Despite being overlooked by the programs from his home state, Johnson still managed to end his prep career with a game-winning touchdown in the intrastate all-star game.
