Auburn landed a running back commitment from one of the best players in Mississippi this recruiting cycle.

Jarquez Hunter, a 3-star prospect out of Philadelphia, Mississippi (Neshoba Central) on Friday announced his pledge to play at Auburn during a ceremony at his school. Hunter, who is the only running back in Auburn’s class, is listed at 5-foot-10 and 190 pounds and is the No. 36 rated running back in this class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s the No. 12 player in the state of Mississippi.

Hunter had a reported 20 offers and Mississippi State was among the finalists. Memphis and Iowa were also in the final mix.

Hunter joins a running back position at Auburn that currently has  Tank Bigsby, Shaun Shivers and Devan Barrett. New Auburn coach Bryan Harsin on Wednesday addressed the need to find more depth at running back.

“We’re not done at the running back position. We know that’s an area where depth is a concern,” Harsin said. “We have very good players at that position, but we do need depth and wanting guys in here that can play and provide value to what we are doing.”

Hunter earned Mr. Football honors for Mississippi’s Class 5A after he rushed for 1,687 yards and 22 touchdowns and also added 17 receptions for 234 yards and two TDs.
