Recognition for Montez Sweat’s performance against Auburn last Saturday didn’t stop at SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week.
The senior defensive end earned two national honors Tuesday, being named the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week and the Bednarik Player of the Week. The accolades were voted on by the Football Writers Association of America and the Maxwell Football Club, respectively.
Sweat terrorized the then-No. 8 Tigers with a career-high three sacks, a forced fumble and two quarterback hurries. His presence on the edge helped the Bulldogs limit Auburn to just 304 yards in a 23-9 victory that righted the ship after back-to-back conference losses.
Sweat was the first Mississippi State player to record three or more sacks in a game since 2005, and he now has 18 sacks over his career, which is seventh-most in program history.
