Mississippi State fired Zach Arnett Monday morning, less than a year into his tenure as head coach of the Bulldogs.

The firing comes after Mississippi State’s 4-6 start to the season and a disappointing 51-10 loss to Texas A&M on Saturday. Arnett took over as interim head coach last December after Mike Leach was hospitalized and was hired as head coach shortly after Leach’s death. It was undoubtedly a tough time to take over as head coach following Leach’s death.

Arnett won just 5 total games as head coach of the Bulldogs.

While his time was head coach was short lived, Arnett was with the program for almost 4 seasons. He was hired as defensive coordinator in 2020. He might not have had major success on the field, but it’s obvious he had a special connection with his players. Following his firing on Monday, several players reacted on social media.

Mississippi State will have to finish up the season against Southern Miss and Ole Miss with a new coach at the helm. Greg Knox will serve as the interim head coach of the Bulldogs for the final 2 games. It’s his second time serving as an interim for Mississippi State, as he was also interim head coach following Dan Mullen left the team in 2017.
