Mississippi State wide receiver/tight end Dontea Jones opted out of the 2020 season, which has been played amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, it appears Jones may not play another game for the Bulldogs.
According to AL.com’s Matt Zenitz, Jones has entered the NCAA transfer portal, a report that was later confirmed by Rivals.com. Jones would have been a redshirt senior in 2020, had he decided to suit up for Mississippi State.
Now, Jones could be transferring to a different school to complete his college career. Over four seasons with the Bulldogs from 2016-19, Jones had 10 receptions for 110 yards and a touchdown, with his lone score coming as a redshirt sophomore in 2018.
Listed at 6-foot-4, 230 pounds, Jones was a 3-star recruit in the 2016 class when he was coming out of Louisville (Miss.) High School. He committed to Mississippi State on June 1, 2015, then enrolled at the school the following year.
Jones never played a game for Bulldogs head coach Mike Leach, who just completed his first regular season with the team. Mississippi State went 2-7, losing its last three games and seven of its last eight.
