Mississippi State’s bats come alive, power Bulldogs to College World Series

Monday night was an elimination game in the super regional round of the NCAA Tournament in Starkville. And boy, did it ever deliver the excitement and drama.

Notre Dame jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. But, the Bulldogs quickly got that run back in the bottom of the inning. Then, the Mississippi State bats came to life in the bottom of the second on a warm night at Dudy Noble Field.

The Bulldogs scored 6 runs in that half-inning, punctuated by this 3-run homer by Logan Tanner:

Rowdey Jordan was a pest all game long. He scored a run in the first inning after reaching on an error. He scored again in the bottom of the second. Oh, and he ended Notre Dame’s second inning with this incredible diving catch:

Mississippi State held a 10-2 lead through 4 innings, but the Irish didn’t go way. They managed to cut Mississippi State’s lead to 11-7 entering the 8th inning.

And we would be remiss if we didn’t show you this absolute bomb by Notre Dame’s Niko Kavadas:

He absolutely tore the cover off that baseball, launching it deep into the Starkville night.

But, ultimately, the Bulldogs managed to hold on for the win, with Landon Sims closing out the 11-7 victory with 4 innings out of the bullpen. He got Kavadas to ground into a double play to end the game.

Now, the Bulldogs have their work cut out for them when they get to Omaha. They’ll face 2-seed Texas in their first game of the College World Series. That game will take place on Sunday at 7 p.m. Eastern Time on ESPN2.
