Mizzou cancels Week 7 pregame flyover amid ongoing government shutdown
It will be one of the biggest games Memorial Stadium has seen in years, but it won’t get the full pregame experience on Saturday.
The Missouri athletic department announced on Friday that the planned military flyover before Saturday’s game against No. 8 Alabama has been canceled as a result of the ongoing government shutdown. The ROTC Cannon Crew will not be present at the game, either.
The school did reveal, though, that the Missouri State Highway Patrol will serve as the pregame color guard on Saturday.
“We appreciate their support and look forward to honoring them at Memorial Stadium,” the school said in a statement.
The country entered Day 10 of a federal shutdown on Friday. Following a failure by lawmakers to resolve a budget deadlock, the government shut down on Oct. 1. According to a release from the Congressional Budget Office, active-duty military personnel are working without pay until the impasse ends.
Other football games across the SEC have been similarly impacted. Neyland Stadium won’t have a pregame flyover on Saturday before the Tennessee-Arkansas game. The flyover in College Station before last weekend’s game between Texas A&M and Mississippi State was also called off.
Kickoff on Saturday is set for noon ET in Columbia. The game is being aired on ABC.
