Mizzou fans did not take a recent challenge from head coach Eli Drinkwitz lightly.

Last week, Drinkwitz put some pressure on the Tiger faithful heading into 2024. With some tickets still available, the head coach said falling short of a sellout in Week 1 would show “we’re not where we want to be as a fan base yet.”

“OK, that’s just the reality of it. Don’t sit on the sidelines and say, ‘well, it’s gotta be this game.’ No, it doesn’t. Come watch this team and be excited about this team and embrace this team … We need to sell it out,” Drinkwitz challenged.

The good news is Tiger fans responded. On Wednesday, Mizzou officially confirmed Week 1 is a sellout, setting the stage for a great season opener for the Tigers.

Coming off one of the best seasons in program history, Mizzou enters the season No. 11 on the AP Top 25. ESPN’s Football Power Index also gives the Tigers a projected record of 9.0-3.2 with a 37.2% chance of reaching the new 12-team Playoff.

The opener against Murray State is not expected to present a challenge, and future showdowns against Buffalo, Boston College and UMass give the Tigers a great shot at finishing the nonconference slate undefeated. After that, they’ll have to navigate an SEC schedule that includes ranked opponents in Texas A&M, Alabama and Oklahoma.
