Mizzou will have to account for the loss of one newcomer and a player expected to play a key role on the defense this season.

The program confirmed reports that Darris Smith, a key edge rusher, was injured in practice on Tuesday. Unfortunately, Smith’s knee injury will sideline him for the entirety of the 2024 season.

Smith spent his first 2 college seasons with Kirby Smart’s Georgia program and saw time as a reserve player in each season. He was expected to play a larger role for Mizzou’s defensive front, but that role will have to be put on hold.

Coming out of high school, Smith received a 4-star composite rating. Listed at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds, Smith received a 4-star transfer rating from 247 Sports with tantalizing physical makeup. While with the Bulldogs, Smith recorded 6 tackles and a TFL.

Last season, Missouri was able to deliver a balanced performance with an offense that averaged over 32 points per game and a defense that surrendered just under 21 points per game. The defense is replacing some key pieces, including Darius Robinson and Ennis Rakestraw Jr. and must now account for the loss of Smith up front.
