The two-time defending Eastern Division champions had few problems disposing of the Redhawks behind a dominant effort defensively during Barry Odom’s debut as the leader of that side of the football.
Linebacker Kentrell Brothers recorded an SEC-best 16 tackles and blocked a punt that was returned for a 41-yard touchdown by Aarion Penton to lead the charge.
Saturday also marked the debut of heralded freshman quarterback Drew Lock who spelled Maty Mauk in the second half with stellar results. Lock completed 6-of-10 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.
Each of Mauk’s two touchdown passes came in the first quarter. He finished with 181 yards and an interception.
