The college football coaching carousel picked up another opening Sunday afternoon, as Colorado State has reportedly parted ways with Jay Norvell.
The firing, reported first by CBS Sports, comes as Norvell’s Rams dropped to 2-5 overall in 2025 following a 31-19 home loss to Hawaii. Norvell, who was in his fourth season at the helm in Fort Collins, was dismissed with an 18-26 overall record at CSU and a 13-13 mark in Mountain West Conference games.
Norvell had previously coached Nevada from 2017-21, where he compiled a 33-26 record in 5 seasons and earned the Wolf Pack berths in 4 straight bowl games. He was hired to replace Steve Addazio, who was fired after 2 seasons in Fort Collins from 2021-22.
Colorado State currently ranks 111th in passing offense at 184.1 yards per game and is 106th in scoring at 22.1 points per outing. The Rams defense has allowed 27 points per game this season. CSU downed Northern Colorado at home 21-17 on Sept. 6, and upended Fresno State 49-21 on Oct. 10.
The Rams are the ninth program to make a coaching change through the first 8 weeks of the 2025 season after Billy Napier was fired at Florida earlier Sunday. Colorado State’s leadership change happens as the school is joining the reborn Pac-12 with other teams from the Mountain West ahead of the 2026 season.
