Moving on from Schiano: Several coaches with SEC ties mentioned as candidates for Rutgers job
A reunion between Greg Schiano and Rutgers has been ruled out according to Brett McMurphy of Stadium, and the Rutgers search for Chris Ash’s replacement continues.
The list of candidates has evolved since Ash was fired, and the latest crop of names is littered with current and former SEC coaches now that Schiano is not in the mix, according to Bruce Feldman of FOX Sports.
Former Tennessee head coach and current Alabama offensive analyst Butch Jones is a name that has been in the conversation from the get-go, although he reportedly removed his name from consideration weeks ago. In his time at Cincinnati, Jones used to compete against Rutgers and Schiano in the Big East.
Mississippi State head coach Joe Moorhead is another name appears to be on Rutgers’ list, along with former Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema.
Outside of the SEC, Feldman lists Michigan linebackers coach Anthony Campanile and Ohio State defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley.
Bielema, who currently is working as the defensive line coach under Bill Belichick for the New England Patriots, had a mostly unsuccessful tenure at Arkansas. His Big Ten success at Wisconsin, however, could be enough to convince Rutgers to talk to him.
Moorhead is fighting for bowl eligibility in his second season at Mississippi State but was one of the hot names on the coaching market with his success as James Franklin’s offensive coordinator at Penn State.
With multiple names in the mix, it almost seems likely that a former SEC head man will be patrolling the sidelines at Rutgers.
