ESPN’s Heather Dinich has put out a fascinating article on awkward and wild autograph requests made to college football head coaches. It includes plenty of names familiar to SEC fans, like Steve Spurrier getting asked to sign a pacemaker and Bret Bielema being asked to sign a prosthetic limb.
Not surprisingly, Lane Kiffin had two hilarious starters, both tied to his time as Tennessee’s head coach in 2009.
When he was at USC, he received a package from a Tennessee fan. It was items he had signed as the Vols head coach.
“A Tennessee fan mailed me things I signed for him because they said they don’t want this trash in their house,” he said, “so they mailed it back to me.”
When Kiffin was Alabama’s offensive coordinator, one Crimson Tide fan decided to remind him of a painful Third Saturday in October memory. A woman asked Kiffin to sign a photo of the “Rocky Block,” which preserved a 12-10 win for Alabama and denied Kiffin and the Vols an upset for the ages.
“She asked me to sign it with ‘Roll Tide’ on it,” Kiffin said.
“I said, ‘I’ll sign it, but I don’t think I can really write ‘Roll Tide’ on this picture.”
