Bowl games featuring an interim head coach or an off-field staffer filing in for an assistant are nothing new. Utah State, however, will be severely understaffed taking on North Texas in Saturday’s New Mexico Bowl.
Texas Tech hired Matt Wells away from Utah State in November. Wells has brought most of his Utah State staff with him to Lubbock to begin recruiting for the Red Raiders, meaning not many staffers were still at Utah State to prepare the Aggies for the New Mexico Bowl or coach in the game.
In fact, Utah State will have a makeshift staff of only four coaches. The NCAA allows for a head coach and 10 on-field assistants.
It would be a shame if being understaffed leads to weak finish for Utah State. The Aggies went 10-2 this season and were ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 throughout the year. The New Mexico Bowl kicks off at 2 p.m. ET and airs on ESPN.
Since Matt Wells was hired by Texas Tech and is taking most of his staff with him to Lubbock, only four Utah State coaches are on hand today for the New Mexico Bowl.
