The entire college football community will certainly be mourning with the New Mexico Lobos today.
Safety Mark Byrd has reported died after a single car accident on Tuesday afternoon, according to a report from DailyLobo.com.
The report cites a press release from the university, which details the incident which occurred near Gallup, New Mexico.
It states that Byrd and his girlfriend were driving down Interstate 40 on their way home for the holidays, when their car suffered a blowout.
Both Byrd, who was 20, and his passenger were ejected from the vehicle. Byrd died instantly, while the passenger was taken to a local hospital.
The Daily Lobo quoted a statement from Lobos coach Bob Davie:
“This is an absolute tragedy. Markel Byrd was an outstanding person and student-athlete and we will miss him,” head coach Bob Davie said in a statement “I was with the family late Tuesday night and obviously they are devastated. Our thoughts and prayers go to them. Markel will forever be a member of our family.”
Byrd led the Lobos, who were recently featured in a high-scoring game against Arizona in the New Mexico Bowl, with three interceptions on the season.
