The NFL is fully embracing Las Vegas as the new home to one of its franchises.
The league announced Wednesday that the 2020 draft will be in Las Vegas, the future home of the Raiders. The draft coincides with the Raiders’ first season in their new Las Vegas stadium.
“The NFL Draft is one of the most-anticipated events of the year and we are excited to take it to Las Vegas,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a press release (via NFL.com). “We look forward to working with the Raiders, Las Vegas officials and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority to create an unforgettable week-long celebration of football for our fans, the incoming prospects and partners.”
As states have begun legalizing sports gambling, the NFL has appeared eager to welcome Las Vegas to its 32 host cities. Moving the Raiders there was a big step in that direction, but staging the draft in Las Vegas for at least one year is another sign of good faith on the league’s part.
Nashville will host the 2019 NFL Draft before the event moves to Las Vegas the following year.
