Potential top 5 pick announces he is opting out to focus on 2021 NFL Draft
One of the best players in college football is off to the NFL as Oregon left tackle Penei Sewell announced on Monday that he has opted out and will focus his efforts on the 2021 NFL Draft.
Of course, Oregon is currently scheduled to sit out the fall season with the hopes of playing in the spring. However, with no official plans outlined for the Pac-12 to actually play in the spring, there’s no telling if that will even happen.
Instead of working out with his teammates and taking virtual classes, Sewell is off to begin his training for the NFL.
The massive lineman is projected as one of the top overall prospects for the 2021 NFL Draft. The only players potentially standing in Sewell’s way of becoming the No. 1 overall pick look to be Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields — both of which would have to declare early for the 2021 NFL Draft in order to do so.
For the time being, Sewell may just be the No. 1 overall prospect on draft boards now that he’s declared for the 2021 NFL Draft.
NFL Media’s Mike Garafolo calls Sewell an “expected top 5 pick” below while NFL Media’s Bucky Brooks and The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman were quick to point out what an impressive prospect the lineman projects to be for the NFL.
Talked to multiple defenders in the ‘20 draft (inside and outside of the PAC-12) who pointed to Sewell as the best player they’ve faced. Dominant OL w/great size, strength feet and hands. #NFLDraft https://t.co/ltFpipjFXt
