Starting jobs aren’t official yet, but some former rivals could be facing off to open the NFL’s 2020 season.

The Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots will play Week 1 in Foxborough. Miami returns veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick, but Dolphins fans already Tua Tagovailoa fever. Time will tell if the coaches feel ready to go with the top-5 pick.

If Tagovailoa does get the nod, he could be facing a former college rival in an AFC rivalry matchup. Former Auburn QB Jarrett Stidham is considered the clubhouse leader to be New England’s starting QB in the post-Tom Brady era. Tagovailoa’s Tide won the 2018 Iron Bowl 52-21. The then-sophomore Alabama quarterback threw for 324 yards and 5 touchdowns in the victory while the UA defense limited Stidham to 13-of-30 passing for 127 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Miami’s home debut comes in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills.

As for the No. 1 overall pick in 2020, Joe Burrow’s Cincinnati Bengals open at home against the Los Angeles Chargers. As with the other quarterbacks mentioned, Burrow hasn’t been named the starter, but Cincinnati’s release of veteran Andy Dalton indicates the Bengals are confident that their new QB is ready to start.

We could get Burrow-Tagovailoa Round 3 in Week 13 (Dec. 6) when the Bengals are scheduled to travel to Miami. The road quarterback memorably won those meetings in 2018 and ’19.
