It’s just the competitor in him.
That’s essentially how Alabama head coach Nick Saban defended racing someone on the streets of Tuscaloosa.
“The competitor in me — it was over quick,” Saban said after admitting to racing a guy in a “hot tamale Mustang” on Wednesday, according to Charlie Potter of BamaOnline247:

NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski was, oddly enough, in town Thursday night for Saban’s weekly radio show. That may have prompted the coach’s need for speed.

The fact that Saban admitted to street racing predictably drew some attention on social media. Crimson Tide running back Damien Harris wishes he could have been there:
I would pay money to have been in the car with coach Saban listening to him talk trash 😂😂😂 https://t.co/pZnYJPlBa2
