Although there’s a battle going on behind Tua Tagoaviloa, it seems that Mac Jones is winning it.

Jones is battling Tagovailoa’s brother, Taulia, for the backup quarterback job. Fellow freshman Paul Tyson is also in the mix.

The Crimson Tide held their first scrimmage Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium, and afterwards, Nick Saban met with the media. He was asked about Jones’ performance.

“Mac played well today,” Saban said. “Mac had a really good day today. He had a high completion percentage, threw for some big plays,  and really did a good job. Some of it against the first defense. I thought he did a nice job.

“I thought he did a really good job of trying to lead the team when he was in there and did a good job.”

As we’ve seen over the last two seasons, Alabama’s backup quarterback is going to play potentially meaningful minutes. Everyone remembers when the elder (then backup) Tagovailoa came off the bench against Georgia during the 2017 season’s national title game. Nobody can forget how backup Jalen Hurts brought Alabama back in the SEC Championship Game against Georgia in 2018 either.

So, Jones may be sitting in a very important seat for Alabama. The Jacksonville, Florida, native Jones completed 5-of-13 passes for 123 yards during 2018.
