Nick Saban had his weekly radio show on Thursday as Alabama hosts Texas on Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Jalen Milroe was outstanding in his Crimson Tide debut against Middle Tennessee State, throwing for 3 touchdowns and completing 13 of his 18 passes while throwing 0 interceptions. He was also the Tide’s leading rusher (7 carries, 48 yards, 2 touchdowns).

Of course, there’s the qualifier that it was against Middle Tennessee State. Texas, a future conference opponent, will be a massive early-season test for Milroe, a native of the Houston area. While Saban initially declined to get into a “hypothetical” discussion about his quarterback’s play would help the others in the position room, he’s opened up a little more throughout the week.

“He played well last week,” Saban said on “Hey Coach” on Thursday. “We’re hopeful that he’ll be able to develop more and more with experience, he’ll develop more and more confidence and he’ll continue to play well.”

The performance of Milroe against the Longhorns will be under the microscope on Saturday and could provide an early glimpse into the Crimson Tide’s College Football Playoff hopes for 2023. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
