One of the more intriguing story lines that has emerged so far in the 2025 season has been the number of quarterbacks who have been slinging the rock at an elite level across the country.
The quarterback play has been so great across the board so far this year that it’s become very difficult to pick just 1 guy who has been head and shoulders better than the rest of the field.
Legendary former Alabama head coach Nick Saban was asked to give his thoughts on who the best signal caller has been so far this season on College GameDay, and he named several guys who have stood out in his eyes.
“I think potentially, John Mateer at Oklahoma has been injured — if he’s healthy, he has the opportunity maybe to be that,” Saban said. “But I think these two quarterbacks playing here today (at Orgeon) — Dante Moore and Fernando Mendoza both have the opportunity to be the No. 1 quarterback. But nobody has done what Ohio State’s quarterback Julian Sayin is — completing 80% of his passes. Nobody else has done that.”
Saban also gave a shout-out to the current quarterback for the Crimson Tide in Ty Simpson, a player whom Saban himself actually recruited while he was still in charge at Alabama.
“He’s my guy,” Saban said about Simpson. “We recruited him to Alabama, and I love the guy.”
There has certainly been no shortage of high-level play from the quarterback position so far in 2025, and this trend is only likely to continue as the season continues to roll along into October and beyond.
It will be interesting to see if anybody can truly separate themselves from the rest of the pack down the stretch and elevate their team to that next level in the chase for the College Football Playoff National Championship.
