Nick Saban likes ‘attitude’ from Alabama secondary after struggles against Texas

Nick Saban knows Alabama’s secondary had its fair share of struggles against Texas and standout QB Quinn Ewers.
Saban was first to admit that on Wednesday during the SEC’s weekly teleconference. Regardless, he’s still behind his group of guys. Saban noted that the attitude following Alabama’s loss to Texas has been good and that despite the loss, the Tide’s secondary is working so it doesn’t happen again moving forward.
“We obviously didn’t play very well in the last game, we gave up a lot of explosive plays,” Saban said Wednesday. “We take responsibility for that as coaches. We got to try to get our players better prepared for what they’re going to see. But I like the group, their attitude has been good, they’re working hard.”
So how does Alabama improve moving forward in the secondary? It starts with communication from himself and the rest of the coaching staff. Better prepared players lead to better results on the playing field.
He highlighted that communication as he spoke Wednesday, too.
“I think that’s all part of preparation, it’s a part of preparation from our standpoint as coaches and teachers and from their standpoint in terms of comprehending exactly what we want to do or are trying to do and then I think they’ve got to carry that communication on the field so that they can play well together and have a good understanding of exactly what they’re supposed to do and how they’re supposed to do it. So we’re responsible that as teachers that the students get it right, and there’s got to be a high level of communication both ways.”
Alabama may have suffered a setback against the Longhorns, but the season is far from over. The remainder of the SEC West has struggled out of the gate and apart from maybe Ole Miss, none of the west teams look like they could contend with the Crimson Tide moving forward.
We’ll know soon enough. For this week, Alabama travels to South Florida to take on former Tennessee OC Alex Golesh’s Bulls. The game is set for 3:30 ET on ABC.
