Nick Saban is still trying to make a decision at the safety position before the season opener. There’s a whole host of players who are competing for the job.

Caleb Downs is one of the players in the mix. Downs was a former 5-star prospect and Saban noted how mature the freshman is.

“Caleb’s done a really good job, he’s a bright young guy, he’s very instinctive, mature beyond his years, I think,” said Saban. “He’s played really, really well in fall camp and we just want him to continue to grow and develop the experience he needs to be able to play well. I know he wants to play well and we want to help him play well.”

The 247Sports Composite ranked Downs as the No. 1 safety and Georgia recruit from the 2023 class.

UAB transfer Jaylen Key, Malachi Moore, and Christian Story are also apparently in the running. Saban stated that Devonta Smith Jr. should receive reps when healthy.

The Alabama secondary allowed 187 yards passing per game last year. The Crimson Tide ranked third in the SEC in that stat.

If makes sense that Saban is taking his time to think about which players should start at safety in 2023.
