Arguably the biggest Alabama football story of the week has nothing to do with the team itself.
Alabama AD Greg Byrne announced this week that the school is bringing back a tradition: “Dixieland Delight” in the fourth quarter at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
The song by legendary country band Alabama is a favorite stadium sing-a-long for the Crimson Tide faithful. Problems arose when some fans, particularly students, added some extra words to the song unfitting of a family setting such as a UA football game.
Byrne and others are counting on fans to sing the song “the right way” (i.e. without the extra words) something Saban fully endorsed in comments he made on his weekly radio show Thursday night.
Saban on the return of “Dixieland Delight” to Bryant-Denny Stadium’s play log: “It’s a great tradition and one I really enjoy. … It got taken away for a good reason and I hope all the people who embrace it now will be able to hold everybody accountable to do it the right way.”
