Nick Saban says selection committee should modify approach to CFP rankings
Nick Saban believes the selection committee should change its approach to the College Football Playoff rankings.
Saban’s Alabama was left out of the Playoff last year after the Tide fell to Tennessee and LSU, by 3 points or less in each game. Those 2 games ultimately cost Alabama a spot in the Playoff, but Saban still believes he had one of the best 4 teams in the country.
Saban believes the Playoff committee should factor in strength of schedule more when deciding who gets left out.
“I felt like last year we were probably one of the best four teams in the country but because we lost two games on the last play of the game we never got into the playoffs,” Saban said on the Pat McAfee Show Thursday. “But I think they should put more emphasis on strength of schedule, who you play, how many top-20 teams you played and beat, whatever it might be, so you get the best teams in the game.”
As it stands now, no team with 2 losses has made the Playoff.
Moving forward, Saban believes an expanded Playoff with 12 teams will include all of the best teams and be more forgiving to teams with tougher schedules.
“I think when you go to 12 teams you definitely get all the best teams,” Saban said. “But I think right now it can be a little bit hit or miss.”
