Nick Saban to return to coaching? Greg McElroy cites ‘in-the-know’ source at SEC Media Days

Could legendary head coach Nick Saban really be thinking about a return to football?
Greg McElroy floated the possibility on McElroy and Cubelic in the Morning on Monday ahead of SEC Media Days. More to the point, McElroy insisted that “people in the know” around the sport told him that Saban has an interest in returning to the game. “If it wasn’t someone notable, I would never say a word,” McElroy insisted.
“This is a little bit out of left field, but the question was asked of me … a very much in the know person that I have a lot of respect for and have spent a lot of time around and just really, really admire,” McElroy said. “They seem to think Nick Saban’s not done coaching. I had a similar reaction. He’s pretty adamant that he thinks Nick Saban will be coaching again. … Look, if it wasn’t someone notable, I’d never say a word.”
For what it’s worth, Paul Finebaum is far from on board with this idea. He gave McElroy a firm “no” when asked if he believes there is any legitimacy to that idea. Later, while on the SEC Network panel at SEC Media Days, McElroy admitted that he also would be surprised if Saban returned to coaching, though he still stuck by what he heard.
It is worth noting that Saban appears to be quite happy in retirement, as Finebaum pointed out when discounting McElroy’s source. Saban has a job on College GameDay, and he’s approaching 75 years old. Given all he’s accomplished in his career – 7 titles, 6 of which were at Alabama – it would certainly be a shocking development.
Alabama kicks off the 2025 season against Florida State on August 30.
