Note to SEC QBs: Don’t throw on Greedy Williams

SEC quarterbacks are well aware they’re facing “DBU” when they play LSU, but they may not have known just how good Greedy Williams would be in 2017.

Williams, who will be a redshirt sophomore in 2018, had a phenomenal freshman season. He was a conference co-leader in interceptions (6) and No. 1 in the SEC in passes defended per game (17 in 13 games).

Surprise, surprise – Williams’ advanced stats are just as (or, arguably, even more) impressive.

A recent tweet by Pro Football Focus shows that SEC quarterbacks were unwise to throw on Williams when facing the Tigers. Among returning cornerbacks for 2018, Williams had the lowest opponent passer rating when targeted (25.4) in conference play last season.

Of the 33 times Williams was targeted in SEC games, receivers recorded only 11 catches. Williams, meanwhile, notched two interceptions and five pass breakups.

Now that Williams is no longer a freshman, he’ll likely get more attention when it comes to opponents’ scouting and game-planning. We shall see if SEC quarterbacks learn to throw elsewhere come fall.
